Károly Kerényi

Károly Kerényi is considered one of the major scholars of ancient philosophical and mythical thought of our time, and one of the most renowned historian of religions. Born in today's Romanian city of Timișoara, he studied classical philology at the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest. He became a professor of ancient history and classical philology in Pécs in 1934, then a visiting professor at the University of Budapest in 1941. From 1943 Kerényi lived in exile in Switzerland. He maintained famous correspondences with Thomas Mann and Hermann Hesse and also a close friendship with Carl Gustav Jung.
