Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding 2024
It is with great pleasure that we hereby announce that Omri Boehm has received the prestigious Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding 2024 for his book Radikaler Universalismus. The prize aims at celebrating authors whose work has rendered outstanding services to mutual understanding in Europe and elsewhere and who display a strong awareness of the present.
The jury has provided the following statement (read the full text here):
“The German-Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm will be honoured with the 2024 Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding for his uncompromising defence of the core values of humanistic universalism and the obligation to recognise the equality of all human beings without relativising in any way. In his latest book, Radical Universalism, Boehm resolutely opposes the ideological hardening of the present and takes Kant's definition of enlightenment as man’s emergence from self-imposed immaturity as the basis for a critical examination of Western liberalism and its tendency to think in terms of identities that then become absolute. […] His books simultaneously defend and challenge liberal democracies by demanding obligatory universalism.”
Omri Boehm has published three books with Propyläen, an imprint of Ullstein Verlag. Italian rights are available to date.
- Radikaler Universalismus (2022);
- Israel – eine Utopie (2020);
- Der bestirnte Himmel über mir (February 2024), co-written with internationally renowned author Daniel Kehlmann.
